So, back in February…

Call for Artists! Can you envision bringing mine workers back to this landscape with your art?

Keweenaw National Historical Park, its Advisory Commission, and Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association seek an artist to create an art installation on the western side of US-41, near the Dry House Ruins overlooking Quincy Hill.

As an artist I have always felt misunderstood, when I am likely more guilty of not being articulate enough to express my vision to others. Vision is kind of what plagues me. I have an ability to see solutions to problems and challenges in a way that is fully visualized and complete and often simple in my way of seeing it. I know that this is a fatal flaw or misconception on my part. Things are often more complicated that they seem. But the vision is what I must communicate as it was given to me. The strong desire to see a project to completion will allow me to navigate the challenges en route with enthusiasm.

I have buried so many ideas in my sketchbook. Exorcized them in a way that doesn’t lead me down a path to completion. Doesn’t allow me to see the fulfillment of its creation. No one asked for it. Let’s just leave this here. It’s safer.

Well, sometimes, when a call comes along and the vision is strong, you can’t just ignore what you see. This call was like that. I discovered the call 4 days before it’s deadline. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for the next two days. On day three, I started to write. I wrote until I couldn’t find any other things to say. I edited and re-organized and shaped the text into the desired format as best I could. And then I held my breath and hit the send button.
