Setting my sights on the Keweenaw
Adventure and relaxation. On the 4th of July my alarm went off at 1:10 am, I was not impressed. My husband coaxed me out of bed and we hit the road to Spokane airport. The next three hours of driving was into the growing dawn. Sunrise was gorgeous and the first rays were all the fireworks I needed. We made it to the UP that afternoon. Had a brief visit with family along the way. Next up, class reunion: nice, small and a bit saucy, as it should be. More friend visits as we head for Pt. Abbaye. Camp on Pt. Abbaye is rustic, but always peaceful. The sauna lights easily and my folks are always prepared. The place was stocked with provisions for our arrival. After a day of decompressing in peace, we joined them for a boat ride to the Keweenaw. Our first crossing of the bay was calm and sunny, but by the time we reached Houghton we were sitting pretty tight trying to stay dry. Mooring at Houghton waterfront, we dashed uphill for lunch at the Downtowner to sit out the storm. Although we would have gone another 10 miles by boat to North Portage Entry, we turned back as the afternoon line up of showers was clearly visible. The 10 mile crossing on the way home to Pequaming was rougher than the first but still enjoyable. Grateful my whole family loves being on the water.
Tomorrow morning I begin three days of meetings and tours to get acquainted with the team for my project. I haven’t been to Quincy Mine in 20+ years, but it’s legendary status for locals and history nuts is no joke.
The butterflies in my stomach have returned.
